Reflecting on an incredible NAIDOC Week at Henley High School
Back to NewsWe celebrated NAIDOC Week with the 2024 theme ‘Keep the Fire Burning, Blak Loud and Proud’, and it was truly unforgettable. Here are some highlights from our celebrations:
Mural Painting: Our students showcased their creativity by painting a stunning mural with artist and old scholar Jarrad Brusnahan, adding a vibrant touch to our school entrance. The piece includes ‘Henley green’ coloured footsteps and black footsteps symbolising the school walking together with First Nations Peoples, towards reconciliation.
Nunga Family BBQ: On Wednesday, we brought together our school community for a delicious BBQ, with special guest Natalie Gentle from Reconciliation SA to educate us on the process of starting a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) at HHS.
Assembly and Q&A Panel: Lead by a beautiful Welcome to Country by Isaac Hannam, we were honoured to host special guests for an insightful Q&A panel during our student led NAIDOC Week assembly. Narrative Therapist Tamara Young from Wonky Lines Counselling, Adelaide Crows Midfielder Danielle Ponter, and Airline Pilot Emma Swift shared their inspiring stories and perspectives. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn and engage with Indigenous voices and experiences.
Gifted Kaurna Shield: A heartfelt moment as Isaac gifted the Kaurna Shield back to our school, that was cut form one of our trees last year during NAIDOC Week, symbolising the strength and unity within our community. The school now showcases the Kaurna Shield in glass cabinets, alongside three boomerangs crafted by students using roots they dug up from the school’s trees.
Kangaroo Stew: Nothing beats the warmth of eating Kangaroo Stew around a fire. We shared this traditional dish with everyone during lunchtime at the end of the week, spreading the spirit of NAIDOC Week through every serving.
Thank you to everyone who participated and made this NAIDOC Week a truly memorable experience. Let’s continue to ‘Keep the Fire Burning, Blak Loud and Proud’ all year round!
